David Earl Lawrence, Sr., passed away unexpectedly on July 19, 2026, while doing what he loved most—working on a vehicle. He was born on April 8, 1943, in Hermondale, Missouri, to Robert Preston and Margrett Louise (Knipple) Lawrence. David was the fourth of nine children and was blessed with a life filled with family, friendships, hard work, and countless memories. Family was the center of his world. He looked forward to family gatherings, holiday meals, and never passed up homemade desserts or a bowl of ice cream. One of his favorite family traditions was loading up multiple vehicles every Fourth of July and spending the day together at Norfork Lake, creating memories that his family will cherish forever. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed crappie fishing, bass fishing, and later in life, when fishing from a boat became more difficult, he developed a love for catching flathead catfish from the bank. He also enjoyed sprint car races on the dirt tracks and was an avid NASCAR fan. Talladega held a special place in his heart, and he proudly attended races there in person with his lifelong friend Larry Fikes. From the time he was a young boy, David was fascinated by how things worked. If something was broken, he wanted to know how to fix it. That curiosity grew into a remarkable talent that defined much of his life. He became an exceptional automobile mechanic and truly a jack of all trades. There was very little he couldn’t repair, no matter how big or how small. He began his career at Bob Sullivan Chevrolet before opening his own business, David Lawrence Garage, where he spent years serving his community with honesty, skill, and pride in his workmanship. Anyone who knew David knew his favorite saying: “Slow and steady.” It wasn’t simply a phrase—it was the way he lived. He believed there were no shortcuts to doing a job right. If you wanted something fixed correctly, you took your time, paid attention to the details, and did it right the first time. Those words echoed through his garage for decades as he worked alongside family, friends, and countless young men who looked to him for guidance. His patience, tough love, and willingness to teach left an impact that reached far beyond repairing automobiles. He helped repair lives as well, encouraging many to become hardworking, productive men who still carry his words, “Slow and steady,” with them today. David never met a stranger. He had a warm smile, an infectious grin, and was known for greeting people with a heartfelt hug. If a pretty lady stopped by the garage or the parts store, chances are she was greeted with one of David’s famous hugs and a smile that could brighten anyone’s day. He loved making people laugh, enjoyed good conversation, and found joy in the simple moments of life. His playful personality and genuine kindness made everyone feel welcome. His sweet tooth was just as well known. Family and friends knew how much he loved homemade desserts, and Kasey Lorren made sure he never went without. Whenever she stopped by with one of her homemade treats, David’s face would light up with that familiar grin, followed by one of his trademark hugs of appreciation. Those thoughtful visits became treasured memories and reflected the special friendships he held close to his heart. David had a heart as big as his work ethic. He loved his family deeply, loved unconditionally, and was always willing to lend a helping hand. If David fixed it, you knew it was going to work. If he gave you advice, you knew it came from experience. He quietly earned the respect of everyone who knew him. Among those especially touched by David’s life were Jason Barnes and John Harris, whom David loved like sons. Through his steady guidance, tough love, and unwavering belief in second chances, David became a mentor and father figure not only to Jason and John but to many young men who crossed paths with him through the years. He saw potential where others sometimes did not, teaching them not only how to work with their hands but how to carry themselves through life—with integrity, perseverance, and always, “Slow and steady.” His influence continues to live on through the lives he helped shape. Perhaps the greatest thing David ever repaired wasn’t an automobile at all—it was the confidence, direction, and future of the many lives he quietly helped shape along the way. Whether he was repairing an engine or encouraging young men to keep moving forward, his message was always the same: “Slow and steady.” Those words became more than a favorite saying; they became the legacy he leaves behind. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Preston Lawrence and Margrett Louise (Knipple) Lawrence; his brother, Wilbur Preston (Sonny) Lawrence; his sister, Margrett Dixon; his brother, Larry Wayne Lawrence; his sister-in-law, Sandra Lawrence; and his brother-in-law, VR Meatte. Left to cherish his memory are his sons, Eric Lawrence of Blytheville, Arkansas, and David Lawrence Jr. and wife Tiffany of Hattiesburg, Mississippi. He also leaves his beloved grandchildren, David Lawrence III and wife Brittany, McKenzie Johnson, Hudson Lawrence, and Tinsley Lawrence; his cherished great-grandchildren, Jaxon, Coraline, Calliope, Bradley, and Beau. He also leaves behind James “BJ” Bunch and wife Beth of Lake City, Arkansas, along with their son, Little James, who always greeted David with open arms for one of his hugs, and Sean Bunch of Caraway, Arkansas. David took BJ and Sean in and raised them as his own, working alongside them in the garage for many years. Through his guidance, hard work, and belief in them, he helped shape the men they are today, leaving a legacy that will carry on. David is also survived by his siblings, Robert Lawrence of Greers Ferry, Arkansas; Faye Pate of Greers Ferry, Arkansas; Kaye Muir and husband Rick of Jonesboro, Arkansas; Glenn Lawrence and wife Kathy of Blytheville, Arkansas; and Peggy Meatte of Greers Ferry, Arkansas. David shared more than thirty years of marriage with Georgia Ann Lawrence and always held a special place in his heart for her. He also thought the world of his former daughter-in-law, Sherry Lilly, who remained an important part of his extended family. In honoring David’s wishes, there will be a gathering of family and friends at a later date. Expressions of sympathy may be shared directly with the family.
